Patricia "Pat" Blurton Goodwin

Patricia Ann “Pat” Goodwin, age 78, of Dyersburg died February 10^th, 2021 at her residence with her children and husband by her side.  Born September 22, 1942, she is the daughter of the late Murray W. and Ann Lowe Blurton. She graduated in 1960 from Dyersburg High School where she played basketball and was a member of numerous clubs/organizations including the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and the Beta Club.  She then attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education (with Honors) in 1964 and then earned a Master of Arts in Speech Pathology at Northwestern University in 1965.  She then pursued a 30 plus year teaching career specializing in speech pathology, diagnostics and special education including positions at the University of Tennessee, Memphis State University, the Shrine School for the Multiply Handicapped in Memphis, Memphis City Schools, the Military Schools in San Antonio, and Bryan Independent School District.  Two notable gaps in her teaching career were 4 years (1977-1981) living with husband and children in the Republic of Mali (West Africa) and 2 years (1996-1998) living with her husband in Papua New Guinea.  She loved to travel and visited more than 40 countries.  She also enjoyed sewing, writing poetry, playing bridge, bird watching, and taking care of her pet cats and dog.     

Funeral services will be Friday, February 12, 2021 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home officiated by Reverend Dr. Mary Beth Bernheisel with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James (Jim) Goodwin, her son Tom (Bibi) of Tampa, FL, her daughter Sheryl of Bryan, TX, her brother Murray (Peggy) Blurton of Tiptonville, her grandchildren Julian and Josephine, and her great grandchildren Solymar and Sonny.

The family requests memorials be directed to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 452, Dyersburg, TN  38025-0452.
