Richard Hill

October 8, 1932 — December 17, 2023

Dyersburg

Former Dyer County Mayor Richard Hill, 91, of Dyersburg, died Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Oakwood Community Living Center. Born October 8, 1932, he is the son of the late Woodrow and Linnie Jones Hill.  Mayor Hill proudly served our country in the Korean War and remained active in many veteran organizations in Dyer County.  He made sure that every year we recognized our veterans and their families both on Memorial Day and Veterans Day by organizing the parade and program.

He was on the McIver’s Grant Public Library Board, and he really put his shoulder to the wheel helping in the construction of the new library.  He remained an avid library supporter for the rest of his life.  He also served on the hospital Board of Directors in the past, along with the Dyer County Community Cancer Fund Board of Directors. He was a member of Dyersburg Noon Rotary Club for 40+ years and served as President in 1998. He was named as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Mayor Hill served in Dyer County government for 32 years. He served 20 years as a County Commissioner and the last 12 years as the Dyer County Mayor; he retired on August 31, 2014.  He was a true patriot who loved his country, his church and his community.  He was a dedicated friend to the City of Dyersburg and Dyer County.  He always saw the good in others and lovingly extended a helping hand to many, too numerous to mention. He loved our country and always worked hard for anything that would make life in Dyer County better.

He was a longtime member of First Assembly of God, former plant superintendent at Dyersburg Fabrics, and a self employed “handy man”.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 22, 2023 in the Chapel of Curry Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Jacob Winegardner and Reverend Al Seward with interment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

He is also survived by two daughters, Angela Wallace, Pennie Cutler (George), both of Dyersburg; two grandchildren, Brandie Brimm, Lauren Wooldridge; five great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and his sister, Brenda Pierce of Atlanta, GA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Austell; his brother, Darrell Hill; and his twin brother and sister who died at the age 3 months from pneumonia.
