Richard Martin McCormick

July 1, 1947 — April 10, 2023

Richard Martin McCormick, age 75, of Dyersburg, Tennessee died on Monday, April 10, 2023 at his residence in Dyersburg, Tennessee surrounded by his loving family. 

Born July 1, 1947, in Jackson, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Rev. M.L. McCormick, Jr. and the late Tommie Lee Tennent McCormick.  Mr. McCormick was a hospital administrator serving Hinds General Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi; Methodist Hospital of Dyersburg, Tennessee; Methodist Hospital of Jackson, Tennessee; Senior Vice President for the eight West Tennessee Methodist Le Bonheur Hospitals; and Northbrooke Nursing Home and Short Stay Rehabilitation Center.  He had a love for golf, hunting, soccer, baseball, boating, water skiing, riding his Harley, participating as a member of In Country Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club, daughters’ ball teams, attending band/dance competitions, spending time at the family’s Pickwick cabin, or boating on the Tombigbee or Pearl River.

Mr. McCormick lived out his faith, his love of family, friends, community, and country.  As an active member of Dyersburg United Methodist Church, he served on various church committees, sang in the church choir and participated in Bible Study Groups.  He served his community as charter president of the Rotary Club in Jackson, Mississippi where he was a Paul Harris Rotarian Fellow.  After moving to Dyersburg, he continued as a Rotary Club member.  He was selected as Dyersburg Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year and served as a Board Member of Dyersburg City Schools. 

He spent his life in service to others.  First, as Combat Corpsman in the U.S. Navy embedded with a Marine Infantry Brigade in combat operations during the Vietnam War.  While in the line of duty he received the solemn distinctive Purple Heart medal.  Later, he served his country as a Captain in the Mississippi Army National Guard 134th Combat Support Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi.  His education included Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Business Administration at Mississippi College.

A celebration of life for Mr. McCormick will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Dyersburg First United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 13th beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of forty-four years, Elaine Hardy McCormick of Dyersburg, Tennessee; three daughters, Alison McCormick Schneider (Mark) of Dyersburg, Tennessee; Stephanie McCormick Flynn (Scott) of Atoka, Tennessee; and Tiffany McCormick Riggins (Billy) of Fayetteville, Arkansas; he was “Pop” to his eight grandchildren, Hannah Stewart, Tyler McCormick Flynn, Kyle Flynn, Colin Riggins, Sivana Riggins, and Sadie Riggins, Jake Schneider, Ethan Schneider and two great-grandchildren, Neyland Flynn and Korbyn Flynn.  Other family members include his sister, Laureen Chandler (Larry) and brother, Tom McCormick (Susan), mother-in-law, Marie Hardy, brother-in-law, Harold Hardy (Janie) and numerous nephews and nieces.
