Sheila Edwards

March 5, 1934 — May 5, 2024

Dyersburg

Sheila H. Edwards, 90, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, died Sunday, May 5, 2024, at AHC Dyersburg. Born March 5, 1934, in Dyersburg, she is the daughter of the late Grace Jones Rector and Horace Harvey. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church.

A graveside memorial service will be held in Fairview Cemetery on Saturday, June 1, at 2:00p.m., officiated by Rev. Dr. Mary Beth Bernheisel.

She is survived by her children, Carol Edwards of Dyersburg, and Joseph M. Edwards of Memphis; two grandchildren, Emily Bobbitt (Drew) of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Alex Jones (Jenny) of Denver, Colorado; one great-grandchild, Olivia Bobbitt; and one grandcat, Hoskin Edwards.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James “Jim” McDonald Edwards (August 30, 2011), and her stepfather, Delmar Lee Rector.

She was the Historian of the Dyersburg High School class of 1952. After high school, she attended West Tennessee Business College in Jackson, and worked in the Dyersburg Social Security office. She left that job with the birth of her first child, thus beginning her lifelong career of wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, caretaker, carpooler, sports and concert attendee, and all-around supporter of anything and everything that involved her family.

She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her daughter, Cub Scout leader for her son, and band parent for both (fundraising, selling concessions, and cheering through the half-time shows). If someone in her family was participating in sports, bands, piano recitals, choirs, plays, or concerts, she was there; and, if possible, she brought an entourage of grandparents and neighbors.

An avid reader all her life, she organized the Dyersburg State Book Talks for twenty-five years. She was partial to mysteries, but she enjoyed most genres of fiction.

The family requests memorials be directed to First United Methodist Church, Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, P.O. Box 452, Dyersburg, TN   38025-0452.
